Carpenter Ant Control in the West Kootenays

Seeing Large Black Ants in Your Home?

Finding large black ants inside your home can be concerning, especially when you start seeing them repeatedly.

Carpenter ants are one of the most common pest issues we encounter throughout the West Kootenays. While they don't eat wood like termites, they excavate galleries inside wood to create nesting sites. Over time, large colonies can expand and become increasingly difficult to control without identifying and addressing the source of the infestation.

At Selkirk Pest Control, we help homeowners throughout Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Kaslo, Nakusp, and surrounding communities identify, treat, and prevent carpenter ant infestations.

While carpenter ants are the most common ant problem we treat in the West Kootenays, we also provide treatment for odorous house ants, pavement ants, and other nuisance ant species.

How to Identify Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are among the largest ants found in British Columbia.

Common characteristics include:

  • Black, dark brown, or a combination of red and black colouring
  • Workers ranging from approximately 6–13 mm in length
  • A single node between the thorax and abdomen
  • Smooth, evenly rounded thorax when viewed from the side
  • Winged reproductive ants appearing during spring and summer

Many homeowners mistake carpenter ants for termites. Unlike termites, carpenter ants have narrow waists, elbowed antennae, and larger, more distinct body segments.

Signs You May Have a Carpenter Ant Nest

Seeing one carpenter ant does not necessarily mean you have a nest inside your home.

However, repeated sightings may indicate a nearby colony.

Common signs include:

  • Large black ants appearing indoors
  • Increased activity during evening hours
  • Ant trails leading into walls, soffits, decks, or foundations
  • Small piles of coarse sawdust-like material (frass)
  • Rustling sounds inside walls in severe infestations
  • Winged ants appearing indoors

Why Carpenter Ants Enter Homes

Carpenter ants are constantly searching for food and suitable nesting locations.

Colonies are often attracted to:

  • Moisture-damaged wood
  • Roof leaks
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Window and door frames with water damage
  • Deck structures
  • Retaining walls
  • Tree stumps
  • Firewood piles
  • Outbuildings and sheds

Many infestations begin outside and expand toward structures over time.

Common Nesting Locations in the West Kootenays

Throughout Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Kaslo, and Nakusp, we frequently find carpenter ant activity associated with:

  • Wooded properties
  • Older homes
  • Crawl spaces
  • Decks and stair structures
  • Sheds and detached garages
  • Retaining walls
  • Moisture-damaged structural wood

Because the West Kootenays has abundant forest cover and many homes are located near natural habitat, carpenter ant activity is common throughout the region.

Why DIY Carpenter Ant Treatments Often Fail

Many over-the-counter treatments kill the ants homeowners can see while leaving the colony intact.

This can create the impression that the problem has been solved when the nest remains active nearby.

Successful carpenter ant control typically involves:

  • Identifying likely nesting locations
  • Understanding colony behaviour
  • Determining whether satellite nests are present
  • Applying targeted treatments where appropriate
  • Addressing moisture conditions and structural factors that may be contributing to the infestation

Our Approach to Carpenter Ant Control

Every carpenter ant infestation is different.

Our process begins with an assessment of the property to understand where the ants are active, how they are accessing the structure, and what conditions may be contributing to the problem.

Depending on the situation, treatment may involve:

  • Targeted residual applications
  • Baiting strategies
  • Recommendations for moisture management
  • Habitat modification
  • Prevention measures to reduce future activity

Our goal is not simply to reduce visible ant activity but to help achieve long-term control.

Preventing Future Carpenter Ant Problems

While no property can be made completely immune to carpenter ants, several steps can help reduce the likelihood of future infestations:

  • Repair water leaks promptly
  • Address moisture-damaged wood
  • Store firewood away from structures
  • Trim vegetation away from buildings
  • Remove rotting stumps when practical
  • Maintain proper drainage around foundations
  • Inspect decks, sheds, and outbuildings regularly
